General Guide for vehicles currently using leaded petrol with lead phase out in January 2006.

Vehicle petrol requirements with the phase out of leaded petrol can be categorized geographically into those operating at the coast and those operating inland. Vehicles can be further categorized as those registered before 1996 and those registered after 1996.

  1. Inland (over 1200m altitude)

Vehicles which are currently operating inland on leaded petrol have the following options.

    • Vehicles built before 1996 - Use 93 RON Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) or appropriate available Unleaded Petrol (ULP) grade. Refer to the compatibility chart or consult your local Vehicle Service Outlet to establish whether supplementary bottled anti VSR additive is required when vehicle is operated at high engine speed on ULP.

    • Vehicles built after 1996 - Use available Unleaded Petrol of appropriate RON rating. Refer Naamsa database or your local Vehicle Service Outlet for further guidance.

  2. Coast (less than 1200m altitude)

Vehicles which are currently operating at the coast on Leaded Petrol have the following options.

    • Vehicles built before 1996 - Use 95 RON Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) or Unleaded Petrol (ULP). Refer to the NAAMSA database or consult your local Vehicle Service Outlet to establish whether the Unleaded Petrol should be supplemented with a bottled VSR additive when vehicle is operated at high engine speed.

Note. Some vehicles may require an engine adjustment. For further details refer NAAMSA database or your local Vehicle Service Outlet for advice.

    • Vehicles built after 1996 - Use available Unleaded Petrol of appropriate RON rating. Refer NAAMSA database for further guidance.

Notes

  1. The octane recommendations contained in the Naamsa database are for well-maintained engines in standard condition. An engine which is in any way modified away from standard condition may have a different octane requirement.

  2. On reconditioning of the engine or engine cylinder head, fitment of unleaded petrol compatible valve seat inserts should be considered.
