Ladies and Gentlemen,
INVITATION TO THE MEDIA TO ATTEND REGIONAL MEDIA BRIEFINGS: “THE CLEANER FUELS FOR A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT” INITIATIVE
With effect from 1st January, 2006 – cleaner fuels will be introduced in South Africa. In summary, a revised octane grading structure will be introduced and all petrol will be free of lead. Moreover, low sulphur diesel fuel will be introduced as part of a process of aligning South African fuel standards with international fuel specifications and vehicle technology requirements and, importantly, to improve air quality and a healthier environment in South Africa.
The “Cleaner Fuels for a Cleaner Environment” initiative represents the outcome of a coordinated effort and strategy by the Department of Minerals and Energy, the Department of Environmental Affairs, the South African Automotive Industry, the South African Oil Industry, Consumer Bodies and Environmental Interest Groups.
A number of media communications have been issued over the past 8 months – please refer to the attached media release by NAAMSA dated 31st March, 2005 – and the various stakeholders have decided that it would be appropriate to supplement these by Regional Media Briefings to elaborate on the 2006 Cleaner Fuels for a Cleaner Environment initiative.
